Saguache (Impulse Ranch, CO) | Art Print
In 2022 my friend invited me to stay on his land in the middle of a 28 million year old caldera in Southern Colorado. The high desert is enchanting, but rough and rugged. The landscape is covered with pinon, juniper, and sage. The evening soundscape is filled with howls of distant coyote. Button cacti colonies grow so thick it's impossible not to step on them. I aimed for this painting to capture the quiet solitude at the end of summer, when the chamisa is flowering against the distant hills. A horse stands on a mesa in a high desert landscape. The juxtaposition of the horse and the quilting pattern suggests the meeting of two different worlds: the natural world and the human world. The horse represents the wild and untamed, while the quilting pattern represents the ordered and civilized. The painting is a meditation on the relationship between these two worlds.
